Formless Horrors Number Five, The Unknown Terror

Sometimes a childhood is a horrible thing to remember.  I get bits and snatches of memory of local TV which was at times both horrible and horrifying.   Partly it is I'm seeing these memories through the eyes of the child I once was where something like jujubee blob could be the most frightening thing on earth.  Partly, is since they are in snatches there is no context.  So even an episode of "Nanny and the Professor," involving a grumpy old puppeteer seem oddly frightening.  Still it's best not to go looking too closely or you will find that what a five year old considers wonderfully terrifying is at best banal and at worst just horrible.

Take "The Unknown Terror" as a prime example.  I remember the scenes in the cave as very frightening.  Our heroes have no where to run and death is literally running down the walls.  Now seen again, I just see soap suds being forced into a bad set.  Oh well.

The idea itself isn't too bad.  Bunch of nosy people go south of the border and meet up with an irate scientist who has been using a cave that was once used for human sacrifices as ground zero for his tests.  He now has a people eating fungus (said soap suds) and our adventurers might well be on the menu.  Actually this is a film that cries out for a remake.
