Formless Horrors, the original blob

Yes dear readers, the original jujube of doom.  The Blob.  Coming from space inside a meteor, it nearly ate an entire town before being iced by meddling kids.  As monsters go, the blob was fairly successful.  I believe frankenstein killed ten people max in his first film?  The blob ate whole bars.  Judging by the final size we are easily talking at least a hundred people.

Here is my confession.  The blob scared the hell out of me as a kid.  Two things pinged in my little kid's brain.  One was the unlikely available of fire extinguishers or walk in freezers in my bedroom at night.  The other was the impossiblity of keeping the blob out.  Dracula had to be invited into your house, the blob just crawls under the door.

So the Blob was scary as a concept, but the film really sold it.  For a low budget film it knew exactly how to press the buttons.  From the first time the blob crawls onto the old man's hand, to the end where it eats a whole diner the special effects are extremely good and effective.  For me the worst (best) scene is the mechanic under the car getting it.   He wasn't poking at meteors or messing with science, he was just trying to fix a car and then gets a face full of blob.

Life is unfair sometimes.

  1. The movie Steve McQueen wanted to 'kill' after he gained in popularity, or so I've heard. I like the "jujube of doom" bit. Better analogy than killer jell-o!
