they are spirits that construct a body from blood
they are powerful in their magic and should be avoided

The artwork tells a lot about them. The light patterns are very similar to bug track in wood, which occurs just beneath the bark. That combined with the pulling inhalation of the blood gives an idea of how insidious these hemowraiths are. Nice combo.
