Skyline
I did have high hopes for "Skyline" despite the critics. After all, what do critics know. I'm a critic for ape's sake and I don't know my front from my behind half the time (hint: zippers are a big help there). So, here I am watching folks after a big party waking up to an alien invasion. Aliens, so it seems, have come to Earth seeking our brains. Makes sense, they are an untapped resource around here. So our brave band of post party survivors (literally the party is over folks) must somehow survive the invasion.
Ok, let's look at the good. The aliens were fairly well done in special effects. There is a consistent bio-tech look to the aliens. There is no problems is seeing how they are kicking our collective asses, the real question is what is taking them so long. So, these aliens beat most aliens by a country mile. On the minus side they do have more than a passing resemblance to the aliens in Independence Day. So, that's a minus. Also, just as a point of contention, if you have biotechnology to grow your own giant monster/mech then you don't NEED to go another planet to collect brains.
Another thing I liked was that it really was a good example of the no win scenario. These folks have like one gun between them, and as I pointed out they certainly weren't deep thinkers. Their foes are everywhere, got brain sucking lights, and huge giant monsters. It is certainly a challenge to survive an hour much less days, or even escape. Parts of this film are very exciting.

Really, none of these people interested me in the least. That's sort of a big problem cause when all the special effects are done, there has to be a story you can get behind. There really wasn't one here. So, overall I found it interesting but not great. It was certainly worth a rental.

The Killing
The Killing on AMC is their new series and they are hoping to keep their streak up for intelligent TV. So far, so good. Set in seattle, it is the day by day investigation of the murder of a seventeen year old girl. One detective is all set to leave to sunny California and a new life, but can't leave this last case behind. I like her a lot. She's quiet, thoughtful, and the type of person who'd ask "What would Jesus do," when talking to suspects. One reason she stays on the case, at least so far, is she obviously doesn't trust the new detective to handle it. He's been on undercover duty WAAAAaaaay to long and has now a permanent field of scuzziness. He's the type of cop to get high school girls a hit of marijuana to cultivate trust and information. Somehow these two do work together and I'll be interested to see how they solve the mystery.
Right now the mystery is deep and murky. There are a lot of possible suspects including a politician in mid run for office. No doubt it's going to get nasty political before all is done. I enjoyed what I saw, and was glad that it was in no way like that other murder mystery set in the North West, you know the one with Agent Cooper.
