When I first read "Blood Music" oh so long ago by author Greg Bear, I remember clearly it was one of the first novels to blow my mind with its ideas. First, that it could be possible that bacteria or other micro-organisms could think, second that there could be a "thinking" plague, and most importantly how many people looking at something is too many.
Presented in a clear and concise manner. It starts with one man's fall into the grasp of an alien mind and grows to a global pandemic. Remember, gentle readers, even when the aliens are nice (or not even aliens at all) doesn't mean what they have in mind you'd want.
I love Blood Music. Read it years ago and the ending still haunts me.
