Ars Magica is one of those roleplaying games where it is more talked about than played. Mostly it is because it is a rather daunting game to stage. The players can often have incredible powers and it's tough for a game master to keep up.
It's set in the middle ages where magic exists. The players are magicians who stay away from the rest of humanity in monastary style retreats. players often spend their time increasing their knowledge and power but sometimes are called upon to protect their brothers and normal people from supernatural forces.
The star of the game is the system for magic which allows for spells and spontaneous magic. It works along the lines of a form of grammar where the magician pairs "nouns" like "beasts" or "earth" with "verbs" like "change." It allows for a large range of effects and powers limited only by the players imagination and the game master's whim.
The game also has good details on life and the mind set of the middle ages and is worth looking for if you want an authentic feel for any game. Definitely worth a read!
