YOU ARE IN ERROR. NO ONE IS SCREAMING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.
The Computer is happy. The Computer is crazy. The Computer will help you become happy. This will drive you crazy. Being a citizen of Alpha Complex is fun. The Computer says so, and The Computer is your friend. Many traitors threaten Alpha Complex. Many happy citizens live in Alpha Complex. Most happy citizens are crazy. Which are more dangerous—traitors or happy citizens?
Rooting out traitors will make you happy. The Computer tells you so. If you are not happy, The Computer will use you as reactor shielding. Being a Troubleshooter is fun. The Computer tells you so. Do you doubt The Computer, citizen? Troubleshooters get shot at, stabbed, mangled, incinerated, poisoned, stapled, blown to bits and accidentally executed. This is so much fun many Troubleshooters go crazy. You work with many Troubleshooters. They all carry lasers. Aren’t you glad you have a laser too? Won’t this be fun?
Stay alert! Trust no one! Keep your laser handy!
After years of roleplaying games stressing that you all have to work together, Paranoia was a breath of stinging fresh air. It was a game where hosing each other was the goal. The game master hosed everyone by lying at every opportunity, of course since he lied to everyone he was considered very fair. The players were encouraged to betray each other but only if they couldn't get caught. Paranoia is the best named game ever.
It's being republished now and revamped and that's to the good. The original rules were chunky in places and needed some editing. The main thing though always was gameplay and that depended on the players. This was the game where you had to be able to tie up your best friend, ring a dinner bell for mutant cannibals, and later hand him a beer and say "no hard feelings right?"
If you are with folks who can't handle casual homicide and betrayal (and worse), probably you should find another game.
