The Death Note franchise spans from manga, to anime, to live action film. It is a fascinating story that works along the line of a mystery so it's no surprise that the most interesting character is the detective. L is a fragile seeming being. He is either hunched as he walks or perched on a chair like a bird. He looks like a little goth boy after a hunger strike. Yet, his mind is incredibly sharp, and he was an iron will.
Change the World occurs after the events of Death Note. L, is in effect on his last case. A band of rogue environmentalist scientists and terrorists are working on a fast acting biological weapon not unlike ebola. L becomes involved and finds himself protecting a savant like young boy and the daughter of the scientist who may have found the antidote for the plague. L is not the type of person you'd hire as a baby sitter but he tries hard to take care of his new charges as he tries to save the world.
It's not a bad film, but it doesn't have the fiendish fun of "Death Note," proper. The actor who plays L does a great job with the character, but really saddling him with kids is the last place you wanted to go. It's an interesting exercise of what you do when the story is over, but you still want to use a character. That, though, is not the best of reasons to make a film.
