Some sequels advance the storyline of the first film. Some sequels are like Monday in that it is "The same shit, different day." Welcome to Paranormal Activity 2. Different family, now with little boy, in a different huge house that is filled with cameras being terrorized by a different demon. Basically, the film does everything exactly like the first film.
The thing about these films is that they are very very mechanical in how they generate scares. They do generate scares, but really they are done very cheaply. You set the scene. You know something's going to happen. You wait.
You wait.
You wait.
You... BAM SOMETHING HAPPENS AND YOU JUMP!
It's almost down to a mathematical formula. There's nothing wrong with it, but the film doesn't have any real interesting characters and since it is the first film nearly note for note there's not much reason to see it. Oh, adding a little boy adds a little to scare ratio, but that's also something of a cheap shot. "Oh no, I hope nothing happens to the baby!"
Hah! These movies are so predictable! Nothing will ever compare to the first time I watched "The Blair Witch Project." THAT was terrifying.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, I would also say that breakdown of the characters in The Blair Witch was much better and realistic.
