Why?
This goes against my general rule: "Don't remake a successful film." So why would I remake this? Well I have several reasons. First off, I want to bankrupt Hollywood. Think of the star power of the original, and imagine a similar cast. The cost of the cast would be outrageous. It would be the type of film making not seen since Titanic. An incredible risk on which studios live or die on.
Who would I cast? Well Bruce Willis of course. Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger as himself, Cher, and the whole Will Smith family. I want to see more stars than the last time I ran into a tree.
Another reason? Buildings have kept getting bigger and bigger. I want to make the biggest sky scrapper yet and burn it down. If I could I'd make it so big they'd have to worry about depressurizing the penthouse if the break the glass.
Finally, and most importantly after 9/11 we can add a terrorist subplot to make things even more exciting. Imagine an idiot terrorist ring ala the shoe bomber. Alone they wouldn't have done much of anything, but because of the faulty wiring things quickly go insane. Now there are guys with guns inbetween the fire and the firemen. That would certainly add to the suspense.
Of course the best reason to remake it, would be to give the project to Michael Bay to stop him from making another Transformers movie.
