Last week I was very critical of the new bugs bunny show. I thought the animation didn't do justice to the characters and that the show pretty much killed the classic characters with insipid situations. Well, I'm a fair person so I watched the second episode.
Ugh.
This episode focused on Lola Bunny. A character created specifically for the "Space Jam" movie. She was suppose to balance the male heavy cast, and provide a good female role model. You know, for the kids. In some ways it was annoying to shoe horn a character you know was created not for the sake of the story, but she was well written and feisty and two bunnies are better than one. Well for all intents and purposes they killed Lola this episode. Here she was a forgetful ditz that latched onto Bugs like a leech dipped in superglue. I'll admit there were one or two bits that were funny, but I certainly didn't like this new Lola.
Inbetween this "fun," we had a rap by Marvin the Martian. It was grindingly bad my brain shut down. It was a rap to set back relations between species back eons. The show finally ended with a roadrunner cartoon. They have for reasons I cannot fathom decided to do the road runner sections in CGI. Not good CGI like shreck but bad CGI like that eye burning Garfield cartoon. It KILLS the facial expression of the characters which was 50% of the whole point of a road runner cartoon.
Yes, overall a failure.
Luckily it was followed by "The Amazing World of Gumball," which was far more fun. The story of kids being kids in a freaky crazy animated world, it is just kooky fun. One episode had to deal with trying to replace a lost DVD without telling mom. The story had fun pacing ending with a madcap chase as the kids run from their enraged mom who's riding a bulldog. The animation style is a mix which sort of simulates like how a kid would draw things. I quite enjoyed it.
Alas no modern cartoon can compare with the earlier versions that I grew up with. I love your blog!!!
