Ok, a blaster might have better reach (though in the Star Wars universe no one seems to have taken basic firearms), but the light saber is certainly an elegant weapon. It looks incredible and even sounds bad ass as it whooses around. There is no mistaken one of these bad boys.
If I couldn't have one of these I'd take Larry Niven's version which is just a molecule wide wire strengthened with a force field. Completely invisible it slices through anything not protected with a forcefield.
Of course, if I owned either of these I would no doubt cut my own legs off in a twinkling. So perhaps it would be wiser and better to live in a world without these clever cleavers.
