It's IN the pits, not THE pits.

"Quatermass and the Pit," also known as "Five Million Years to Earth" (which is confused with the Harryhausen flick that has the monster Ymir in it), is a classic of science fiction that everyone should see once. Unfortunately, it is hard to find in DVD. Fortunately, at least at the moment it is up on Utube. Check it out!

The story starts off in the Underground. While digging a new tunnel workers find bones. Scientists determine that they are fossiles. Then they find the mysterious object. Is it an old WWII bomb left unexploded? The scientist Quartermass doesn't think so. Soon the evidence mounts that it is an alien space ship, one that might still hold danger for us here on Earth.

This is a very well paced film as it slowly unfolds the mystery. It's not all cerebral, however, and by the end London is under siege. I was always struck by the end where the surviving characters are just leaning against the walls, beaten and battered, silent as the credits run. I seriously love this film and if the only way you can see it is on Utube then so be it. Watch please! Let's have a return to SMART science fiction films!
