A really good visual representation of life during wartime. It is based on the memories of the director, John Boorman. I think it's his best work. It's episodic at times, but that's the nature of the beast. It's the story of young Billy and his family. Dad's off to war. Big sister is playing with soldiers. Mom is trying to keep everyone together. Billy himself, goes a little feral as his world gets bombed away. Soon the burnt out shells of houses are his and his gang's playground. It's a tale of growing up fast, but learning what's important.
