Gad guard is a children's anime done in a "retro" style akin to that of Giant Robo. It is the story of kids and their giant robots. Always a heart felt subject in Japan. Here it is a junk future where folks live sort of techno thirties art deco lives. The robots are either "Heavy Metals" which are giant work and combat robots or technodes which come from little cubes called gads. The technodes are somewhat mysterious and have an undisclosed level of intelligence and motives. Some claim they all become city destroying monsters in time, but the children who have "adopted" them see only the good.
I love some of the mecha designs. One I liked was a heavy metal crane with a circular track around it. On that track hung its arm that could then wheel around 360 degrees like a demented homicidal pin wheel. I love the jazz music. I love the fractured english of the posters from "Speed the row" to "Tarzan in Technical love."
Really I had fun with this series.
