Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

There has been a tradition in anime for both assassins and seemingly emotionless characters.  I can for example list "Crying Freeman" and "Noir."  Phantom follows securely in that path.  It is the story of a man who awakes with his memory stolen.  He is attacked and trained by a girl named Ein and is told that his new name is Zwei and he is now an assassin or a dead man.

The series is full of semi profound philosophies probaby dredged up my throwing the collected works of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzscheinto the air and aiming at it with a shotgun.  One idea I did find fascinating is that we have a sort of limited free will in that our fate is set but we control the speed to reach the end.  Interesting idea, if you are damned should you glumly hang to the side of the pit, or let go and enjoy the (short) trip?

The action is ok, and some characters are more interesting than usual.  But the trouble with almost emotionless characters is that they are almost always boring.  It's hard to wait for ten episodes for that single tear of remorse.
