My take on Wonder Woman
One thing I think about Wonder Woman is for the most part she has been very rarely given the representation she deserves. I'm not talking about a new jacket or anything like that, but rather just the overall feel. Here, I think I've made her a more distant, mythic figure. I could imagine seeing this wonder woman on top of the building after an epic battle looking down at all the destruction that had been wrought because men won't stop fighting.

It used to be not ok to do anything with the Stars and Stripes but fly them. I'm wondering how WW got away with her placement of those stars? Also, each star represents a state and I'm wondering which one of them exactly is California...
ReplyDeleteGood question. When wonder woman came out there was a whole series of heroes basically wearing the flag as underwear. The only reason I can think of why it was acceptable is that they were seen as emblems just as in political cartoons one can personally things like the flag as a person.
ReplyDeleteThe really amazing thing is that folks didn't freak out over wonder woman more. Of course, it was because they didn't know the details of the originator of Wonder Woman who was a fellow who enjoyed plural marriage with a side order of light bondage. Makes you see that whole golden lasso trope in a whole different light.
Interesting to know Laz. It does shed a bit of a shadow on her, albeit not a dark one. I can totally see her in your context. Small chin and big thighs, with a bikini cut...
ReplyDeleteit's often interesting to know the authors specially of more mythic figures. Was it an accident that the creators of superman, a man from another planet trying to be an american, were from immigrant jew families?
