Static Shock

Milestone comics was an interesting idea.  Published by DC, Milestone was going to be a more hip, urban comic book universe.  In the end, like many such "new universes" it died a quiet death.  The only real break out, though became a hit on  television.

"Static Shock" ran for four seasons and was all in all pretty darn good for tv.  It stars Virgil a young black student in the fictional city of Dakota.  One day during a big turf war between gangs a mutagen was released.  This was known as the "Big Bang," and those who were effected became "Bang Babies."  Virgil is mutated by the gas to have vast control over the electromagnetic spectruum.  With the help of his friend Gears he becomes the superhero Static.

The show is great fun and never takes itself too seriously.  On the other hand it handles the continuity of what is happening in Dakota well.  There is a feeling of over all growth and development not seen in a lot of american animation.  It's hard to find now but well worth watching.
