Crack in the World

Dana andrews did say "prunes gave him the runes"/and what was the meaning of that?

Well I can't say I've seen too many Dana Andrew films but now I can say I've seen "Crack in the World" This is, despite a title suited to sniggering jokes, is a very earnest film. It is also I believe ahead of its time but not neccessarily in a good way.

The film starts off at experimental internation research station. It sort of looks like a James Bond villain's lair but at this time what didn't? Their goal is simple they want to punch a hole from crust of the earth all the way into the magma. This isn't soulless science its being done for the good of mankind. All that good energy waiting to be tapped, and all those metals that can be scooped out of the magma for industry. FOR INDUSTRY!

Well, there's a snag. So far they haven't been able to punch a hole all the way through. Our boy Dana wants to use a nuke for the job. His much younger, and very good looking second in commands says that would be a bad thing. Dana's wife looks at them both and sighs because that is what women scientists did in that era. Oh, and Dana is secretly dying from hand cancer. All this probably effects his decision making capabilities as he goes ahead and nukes the earth.

Look at the title. Look at the movie. There's a crack and it's growing. I'm riding a horse with a moustache.

ahem...

anyhoo.... now they have to use the power of SCIENCE to stop um... the power of SCIENCE. The rest is pretty much a preordained mix of stock shots, minature shots, concerned politicians and soap opera. It's all very enjoyable. I said this was ahead of its time and I meant it. I see five films like this every saturday on the syfy network. All it needs is bad CGI and more bikinis. That could be an interesting film... bikini apocalypse.. has a built in demographic... bring back a cat fight between tiffany and debbie gibson ... hmmm got to do a meeting..

ahem...

anyhow (again) "Crack in the World" is great fun if you are willing to take it in an "Airplane" mode of earnest silliness. Have fun!

  1. Great review! Sounds like a truly missed out on film. Bring in the Godzilla who you accidentally hit while nuking the hole....
